Positive: We stayed at Okonjima Plains Camp and really enjoyed our time there. The room was spacious, very comfortable, and offered a wonderful view over the plains where we could spot some animals right from the terrace. The setting of the lodge itself is beautiful, and the breakfast buffet was one of the best we had during our trip through Namibia (especially the pancakes and freshly made omelettes). Dinner is served as a three-course menu and was overall very good. A highlight of our stay was definitely our guide, Matthew. We went on leopard tracking as well as rhino tracking on foot with him, and thanks to his determination we were lucky to see two leopards and two white rhinos. He did not hesitate to go off the beaten track to make sure we had the best experience possible. I would definitely recommend asking for him if you can. I would say Okonjima is a very good first step into the African wilderness before heading to Etosha.

Negative: On the “less good” side, it’s important to know that leopards are located using tracking collars, so it doesn’t feel like spotting them completely in the wild. This is the strategy of the reserve, but if you expect a totally “untouched” wildlife experience, it might feel different. This kind of exclusivity also comes with higher prices: rhino tracking is about 2000 NAD per person and leopard tracking 1500 NAD per person, so the costs add up quickly.
